Make the Easiest & Softest Baby Blanket

My sweet friend Caroline is expecting her second little girl in a few weeks, so I decided to try my hand at my first baby-themed sewing project! This project is so incredibly special to me because I have watched Caroline’s first daughter grow up over the past year and a half. I’ve photographed her as a newborn, as a six-month-old, and at her first birthday party. So I’m so excited for number two.

I decided to sew an easy baby blanket that also happens to be super comfy and sweet. Caroline’s nursery is lavender and white, but you can easily customize the fabric based on your preferences or the baby’s nursery. (Or you can do what I want to do now and make an adult-sized version because it is so warm and comfy.)

Here’s what you’ll need to sew an easy baby blanket:

  • Soft nursery fabric. I spent about an hour browsing Jo-Ann and decided on a pretty print for one side of the blanket and a complementary solid fabric for the other side. Here is the exact butterfly fabric I used, and here is a similar solid lavender fabric.
  • Soft & Bright Batting (here)
  • Scissors, measuring tape, marker, sewing machine, pins

And here’s now to do it!

Step 1: Cut three pieces of fabric at your desired dimensions. I cut mine to 30 inches by 40 inches. Then, lay them on top of one another like this:

Step 2: Sew a straight seam all the way around your fabric, leaving about 5 inches open anywhere in the seam. This is where you’ll flip the blanket right-side out.

When you’ve finished sewing the seam, clip the corners, which will give you sharper corners.

Step 3: Carefully flip the blanket right-side out by pulling it through the 5-inch opening.

Then, fold the opening in to hide the ragged cut, pin, and sew shut.

That’s it! Really, it’s that easy to make a thoughtful, practical gift for your buds who are expecting! This blanket is also machine washable, and you can put it in the dryer, so it’s easy to take care of. I can’t wait to give it to Caroline. Image may be NSFW.

And I made a matching pillow using the leftover fabric…I used Poly-Fil to fill it.
